Ylenia, Zeynep and Antonia - beautiful names for storm fronts with devastating results

In recent years, Germany has experienced storms like it hasn't for a long time, coupled with considerable amounts of rain.

Record gusts of up to 180 km/h caused damage not only to cities and buildings, but above all to our forests. So far, there is no estimate of damaged areas and quantities of damaged wood, as the forests in many places are not yet passable and walkable again. But many forestry offices and forest owners are already estimating a quantity of storm-damaged timber equivalent to a year's felling.

Unusually and rather rarely, all tree species are affected. Considerable amounts of pine, the perennial problem species spruce, in parts Douglas fir and larch, but also the hardwood with partly thick oaks and beeches! The preliminary damage to the tree roots caused by the hot, dry summers of recent years and the softening of the soil by the rain have caused the trees to lose their secure hold and to topple over.

For all foresters, forest managers and forest owners who have been affected by the consequences of these 3 hurricanes, who have to clear roads and paths of branches, repair damage and process the enormous amount of wood - we have put together a selection of supporting and safety-relevant products. Especially after storms, wood is often under extreme tension and the processing requires high professional competence.

You can find a range of training courses on this topic at the forestry training centres and mobile forestry schools. Here you can find information about action aids. If you have any questions, we will be happy to advise you.

Lying trees are often under tension

  • pronounced fore-, back- and side-slopes
  • Strong wood (Ø at breast height > 25 cm)
  • Signs of rot at the base of the trunk
In such cases, special cutting techniques and advanced technical equipment must be used.
  • Careful cutting into the pressure side
  • danger of jamming the saw
  • then carefully cut into the tension side
  • Repeat the process several times for thicker wood
  • For safety reasons, always stand on the pressure side when tension is applied to the side.
